System76 Adder Pro: A groundbreaking Linux gaming laptop with Intel Panther Lake chip and glossy OLED display.
System76 has just launched the Adder Pro, a Linux gaming laptop equipped with a powerful Intel Panther Lake Core Ultra 7 356H processor and RTX 5070 graphics. The highlight of the device is its rare 165Hz glossy OLED display.
System76, a brand specializing in computers optimized for the Linux operating system, has officially introduced a new version of its Adder Pro laptop series. This is a significant step forward, as the device integrates Intel's latest Panther Lake processors, promising superior performance in a slim and lightweight body.
Power from the Intel Panther Lake processor architecture
The centerpiece of the new Adder Pro is the Intel Core Ultra 7 356H processor from the Panther Lake generation. This chip boasts a 16-core architecture including: 4 high-performance cores (P-cores), 8 power-efficient cores (E-cores), and 4 low-power cores (LP-cores). With this setup, the Core Ultra 7 356H not only ensures smooth multitasking but also delivers impressive performance, considered capable of outperforming the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX "Strix Point" in some real-world scenarios.
To complement its processing power, the System76 allows users to configure up to 96 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM. Storage is also a priority with two M.2 slots (supporting 2280 and 2242 sizes), allowing for flexible upgrades to meet the needs of professional users and gamers.
NVIDIA RTX 50 Series graphics and display capabilities
In terms of graphics processing capabilities, Adder Pro offers two GPU options: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 and RTX 5070. The RTX 5070 version promises up to 15% performance improvement over its predecessor if optimal cooling is maintained. This makes Adder Pro a formidable gaming and graphics workstation within the Linux user community.
The display is a major plus point of the device, boasting a 15.3-inch QHD (2560 x 1600) resolution on an OLED panel. Notably, System76 opted for a glossy finish on this screen instead of the matte anti-glare coating commonly found on current gaming laptops. The glossy finish enhances color depth and contrast, although it may cause reflections in bright light. The 165Hz refresh rate and 16:10 aspect ratio also optimize display space for both entertainment and professional work.
Optimized design and diverse connectivity options.
Despite its powerful hardware configuration, the Adder Pro maintains a compact form factor with a thickness of less than 20 mm. The device has a comprehensive set of input/output (I/O) ports, adequately meeting current peripheral connection needs:
- 2 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports (supports DisplayPort 1.4)
- 2 USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports
- 1 HDMI port
- 1 x 1G Ethernet port
According to System76, the new Adder Pro version is expected to go on sale around the middle of this month. The specific price hasn't been revealed yet, but with its high-end specifications, it will certainly be a premium product in the Linux laptop market.
