Who is the new FBI Director?

After the Director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) James Comey was fired on the evening of May 10, FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe took over as acting director.

This is the second time in US history that a deputy director of the FBI has been appointed as acting director. In 1993, when President Bill Clinton fired FBI Director William Sessions, Deputy Director Floyd Clarke served as acting director for 44 days until Mr. Clinton appointed Mr. Louis Freeh as the new director.

With 21 years of experience working at the FBI, in January 2016, Mr. McCabe became deputy director, responsible for overseeing all FBI investigations conducted domestically and internationally, as well as all matters related to intelligence activities.

Many people believe that the new FBI director will be Mr. Robert Mueller - who 4 years ago was on the list of potential FBI directors, but in the end, President Barack Obama chose Mr. James Comey. Another candidate is Mr. Mike Rogers - a former FBI agent, former President of the Association of Current and Retired FBI Employees with more than 13,000 members.

Before Mr. Comey was appointed, Mr. Mike was on the list of potential directors. Mr. Ken Wainstein, former head of the Justice Department's national security division, was also expected to be the FBI director. He was an adviser to former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Several current and former FBI employees are also on the list of potential candidates, including Michael Mason, the former executive director of the FBI.

Mr. Mason previously oversaw criminal and cyber investigations, coordinated international operations and the agency’s crisis response. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has also been considered a leading candidate.

Mr. Giuliani is a senior representative in Mr. Trump's election campaign and has also been considered for a number of positions in Mr. Trump's new administration, such as attorney general and secretary of state.
