At her family's sugarcane field, Ms. Phan Thi Phuc, from Hamlet 9, Nghia Dong Commune (Tan Ky District), said: After Typhoon No. 2, 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of her family's sugarcane crop collapsed to the ground. With guidance from agricultural officials of Song Con Sugarcane Joint Stock Company, she trimmed the old leaves off the sugarcane plants. When the soil dried, she added potassium fertilizer to the base of the sugarcane to increase sweetness. Now, the sugarcane field has turned green again, with new shoots growing, but she is worried that the yield will decrease.

Mr. Tran Dinh Huong, Vice Chairman of the Nghia Dong Commune People's Committee, said: "The locality has 227 hectares of sugarcane completely flattened by Typhoon No. 2. The commune has coordinated with agricultural officials in charge of the area to disseminate information and guide people on how to restore the sugarcane by pruning the leaves to make the plants easier to care for and controlling sugarcane pests. This is because after rain, the high humidity creates favorable conditions for pests to develop on sugarcane plants."

Mr. Chu Van Hung, an agricultural officer of Song Con Sugar Company, in charge of Nghia Dong commune, added: "When typhoon No. 2 arrived, most of the local sugarcane fields were young. Ideally, farmers should have proactively removed the old leaves before the storm to prevent the plants from being flattened. Therefore, after the storm subsided, the entire sugarcane area of Nghia Dong was flattened. Currently, the company is guiding farmers to remove the old leaves to lighten the sugarcane plants, allowing them to grow naturally. They should not immediately straighten the sugarcane plants, as this affects the roots and root system. After the sugarcane plants have stabilized, farmers can then proceed with hilling and caring for them."

The recent Typhoon No. 2 caused nearly 4,000 hectares of sugarcane in Tan Ky to be flattened. Currently, local farmers are stripping and cutting leaves, clearing the base of the plants, and creating conditions for the sugarcane to grow vertically.
