(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of November 26, the High People's Court in Hanoi opened a criminal appeals trial to hear the murder case against Duong Dinh Quang (born in 1983), Tran Van Toan (born in 1993), and Phan Ngoc Quy (born in 1985), all residing in Vinh City.

Duong Dinh Quang and Le Manh Duong (born in 1982, both residing in Vinh City) were bus assistants on the Vinh - Dak Lak route. During their work, a conflict arose between Quang and Duong due to competition for passengers. On the evening of November 4, 2013, Quang invited Toan and Phan Ngoc Quy to go with him to "talk" to Duong. Quy gave Quang a homemade gun, and Toan took a knife.
Upon encountering Duong's group, the two sides engaged in a fight. Duong Van Quang used a homemade gun to shoot, seriously injuring one person in Duong's group, Dang Van Thanh (born in 1990, residing in Nghia Dan district). The medical examination revealed that Dang Van Thanh suffered 96% health impairment and complete paralysis of the lower half of his body.
On March 17, in the first-instance criminal trial, the People's Court of Nghe An province sentenced Duong Dinh Quang to 15 years in prison, Phan Ngoc Quy to 13 years in prison, and Tran Van Toan to 5 years in prison for murder. The defendants were also ordered to pay Dang Van Thanh 215 million VND in compensation.
Disagreeing with the first-instance court's verdict, Dang Van Thanh filed an appeal requesting an increase in the sentence and civil compensation for Duong Dinh Quang, Phan Ngoc Quy, and Tran Van Toan.
At the appellate trial, the panel of judges determined that the sentences imposed by the lower court on the three defendants were commensurate with their crimes; therefore, there was no basis to accept the appeals for increased criminal penalties for Quang, Quy, and Toan.
However, based on documents proving the health damage and medical and care costs incurred during the rescue and care of Dang Van Thanh, the High Court partially accepted the victim's appeal. The High Court sentenced the three defendants, Duong Dinh Quang, Tran Van Toan, and Duong Ngoc Quy, to compensate the victim with over 240 million VND, with Quang paying over 114 million VND, Quy 80.5 million VND, and Toan 48 million VND. In addition, the defendants must provide monthly support of 1.5 million VND for Mr. Thanh.
