| Mrs. Lien's "giant apple" orchard has been bearing fruit since its second year. |
This is the third year that Mrs. Le Thi Lien's family has...In Quynh Thach commune (Quynh Luu district), the apple harvest season has begun. As in previous years, all the ripe apples are bought up by traders directly from the orchards because this variety of apple has large and sweet fruits.
Ms. Lien said that in 2013, her family went all the way to Hanoi to buy 22 saplings of this "super sweet jujube" variety to plant as a trial. After one year of planting and caring for them, the first harvest yielded a high productivity and economic value. Recognizing the effectiveness of this apple variety, in 2014 her family bought an additional 200 saplings to plant in their orchard, covering an area of over 1 hectare.
Apple trees that have been harvested two or more times yield 70-100 kg each, while first-harvest trees produce 30-50 kg each. "In the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), apples sell very well, with 100-150 kg sold daily," Ms. Lien happily stated. With a selling price of 15,000 VND/kg at the orchard, she earns nearly 3 million VND per day.

| "Giant apples" are grown by people in many localities in Nghe An province. |
Apple trees are fast-growing, requiring only a single planting but maintaining their fruiting ability for a relatively long period, almost 10 years. Therefore, in many areas of Quynh Luu and other localities in Nghe An province, people are boldly investing in apple cultivation.
According to Ms. Lien's experience in apple cultivation, when pruning, it's important to leave only 3-4 branches at the base to facilitate shaping the canopy and encourage abundant fruit production later. In the first year, prune 20cm from the ground, and in the second year, prune 10-15cm away from the first cut. After each pruning, it's necessary to water and fertilize adequately to stimulate rapid growth. Once the fruit forms, to prevent insect pests (bees, fruit flies), bee repellent should be purchased and hung on the trees. |
