Northern Fleet nuclear submarine fires missile in Barents Sea

(Baonghean.vn) - Two nuclear submarines "Severodvinsk" and "Smolensk" of the Russian Northern Fleet successfully conducted missile firing exercises in the Barents Sea, the press service of the Northern Fleet reported.

"The Northern Fleet's nuclear-powered anti-submarine missile cruisers carried out missile firing at a simulated enemy group of ships in the Barents Sea. A complex target simulating a simulated landing ship group of enemy ships was successfully hit by Kalibr and Granit cruise missiles at a distance of nearly 200 km," the statement said.

The crews of the Project 885 Yasen nuclear-powered anti-submarine missile cruiser Severodvinsk and the Project 949A Antey nuclear-powered missile cruiser Smolensk took part in the drills. The crews of the two ships practiced a joint strike, which involved hitting targets simultaneously with cruise missiles of different speeds and flight characteristics.

"According to objective control data, the missile firing exercise was successful. The high characteristics and reliability of the missile weapon have been confirmed," the statement stressed.

As per regulations, the exercise area is closed to the movement of ships and civil aircraft.
