Northwest Vietnam, or the Northwest region, is a mountainous area in the western part of Northern Vietnam, covering an area of 50,576 km2. This region includes the territories of six provinces: Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, and Yen Bai.

According to research by the Vietnam National Tourism Administration, the number of tourists visiting the Northwest region is trending upwards; however, the distribution is uneven among localities, the region is highly seasonal, and the average length of stay is very short.

This shows that the tourism potential of this region has not yet been exploited and utilized, especially since the Northwest region possesses many elements for tourism development, including a mild climate, unique natural landscapes, a rich traditional culture with many ethnic minorities living there, and the preservation of sacred historical values associated with the process of nation-building and national defense.

Besides the well-known and familiar form of community-based tourism, visitors can consider one of the following options to experience a completely new side of Northwest Vietnam.

Adventure tourism

With its mountainous terrain and diverse forest ecosystem, Northwest Vietnam is emerging as a destination for those who enjoy adventurous travel experiences. The variety of adventure tourism activities here is extensive, catering to the needs and preferences of visitors.

Notable paragliding experiences include Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai – starting from Khau Pha Pass, one of Vietnam's "four great mountain passes," flying over the characteristic terraced rice fields of Northwest Vietnam, and landing in Lim Mong Valley. For paragliding in Si Thau Chai, Lai Chau, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Lai Chau's natural landscape, starting from Putaleng Peak – one of the three highest mountains in Vietnam.

Cultural and historical tourism

Besides the distinctive cultural features of each ethnic group, the Northwest region also inherits the traditional and historical heritage of the country, especially the legacy of the long period of resistance that Vietnam once experienced.

Educational tourism experiences that combine introduction to the cultural and historical heritage of resistance-era regions are a unique experience when visiting Northwest Vietnam.

Visitors can visit Son La Prison, built by the French in 1908 – a place that once trained and nurtured soldiers who contributed to the victory of the August 1945 General Uprising.
