According to a US official, the North Korean missile launched early this morning (May 14) landed less than 100km from Russia.

CNN quoted the official as saying that the US estimates the North Korean missile landed in the sea about 96km south of Vladivostok, where Russia's Pacific Fleet base is located.

Meanwhile, according to Reuters, citing a White House statement, President Donald Trump "cannot imagine that Russia would be pleased" with North Korea's latest test, as the missile landed closer to Russia than to Japan.

"With a missile flying closer to the Russian mainland, in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan, the President cannot imagine that Russia would be pleased," the White House statement said.

President Donald Trump called for stronger sanctions against North Korea. "Let this provocation be a call to all nations to impose even stronger sanctions on North Korea," according to the White House.

Earlier, at 5:27 a.m. on May 14, North Korea launched a ballistic missile. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile was launched from the city of Kusong in North Poyongan Province, North Korea.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in condemned North Korea's move, calling it a serious threat to regional security and a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

At an emergency meeting of the South Korean National Security Council held immediately after the launch, President Moon expressed regret over North Korea's actions and affirmed a firm response.

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said that during their meeting in Beijing, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping both expressed concern about North Korea's missile launches.

On the same day, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also declared that North Korea's missile launch was a serious threat to Japan and a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
