Mr. Nguyen Cong Bay, the father of striker Cong Phuong, shared his thoughts on a special Lunar New Year (Year of the Rat) with his son.

Cong Phuong almost missed Tet (Lunar New Year) because he was busy playing matches far from home.

After his adventures in South Korea and Belgium, Cong Phuong returned to Vietnam to play for Ho Chi Minh City FC. However, he almost had to celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year) in a foreign land because the team named after President Ho Chi Minh was busy playing in the AFC Champions League qualifiers.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Bay, the father of striker Cong Phuong, also shared his thoughts on his son's decision to return to Vietnam and his plans for playing matches during the Lunar New Year holiday.

"Playing abroad is an honor for Phuong. Actually, it's difficult to compare it to Europe, so it's good that Phuong got to go and learn more. Returning to Ho Chi Minh City FC and back to Vietnam, where the playing style and everything else are familiar, will be easier."

Cong Phuong will return home late for Tet (Lunar New Year) due to his commitments with Ho Chi Minh City FC in the Asian Cup.

The other day, Phuong called and said that if the match against Buriram United went well, she would have to fly to China to play again and wouldn't be able to come home for Tet (Lunar New Year). Otherwise, she would have to come home very close to Tet and would have to leave again on the second day of the new year. She has very little time to arrange to come home, and traveling back and forth is very difficult for her.”

According to Mr. Bay, every parent wants their children to be together with their family during Tet, but as a player, Phuong has to follow the arrangements of his club.

"Phuong still participates fully in the club's match schedule. She will only take time off when the club allows it. As parents, we all want our children to come home for Tet (Lunar New Year) to celebrate together, but sometimes we have to accept the circumstances and prioritize work. Phuong's job is sometimes like that of a soldier; duty comes first."

Phuong is also thoughtful and simple, just like any other child.

Despite being busy playing away from home, Cong Phuong always cares about his family. The Vietnamese national team player is known as a filial son who always remembers his parents. This year, even though he celebrated Tet (Lunar New Year) late, Phuong had already asked relatives to send gifts home to his family.

Đã lâu rồi, Công Phượng không thể về quê ăn tết sớm

It's been a long time since Cong Phuong was able to go back to his hometown for a meal.

Tet (Vietnamese New Year) early.

Mr. Bay also shared that, like many other children who live far from home, Cong Phuong would help his family prepare for Tet if he could come home early.

"Usually, in the years when Phuong comes home early, she always helps her family wrap banh chung (traditional Vietnamese rice cakes), but this year, even though she's home, her parents have to wrap them beforehand."

In 2019, many of Cong Phuong's teammates from the same generation got married, such as center-backs Bui Tien Dung, Duy Manh, Van Duc, etc. While also thinking about and hoping his son would settle down, Cong Phuong's father wasn't in too much of a hurry to have a daughter-in-law.

"For Phuong, it's probably not going to happen yet. It depends on the circumstances of each player. Actually, wherever Phuong feels comfortable, her parents will arrange things. We're getting older, and as we get older, we want our children to settle down. It's the same feeling for all parents."

Cong Phuong's parents are not in a hurry to find a daughter-in-law.

In 2020, Cong Phuong will be playing in Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, it will be easier for his family to support and visit their son.

"In my hometown, we celebrate Tet until the 15th day of the first lunar month. That's a big celebration, with lots of work to do. I probably won't be able to go to Ho Chi Minh City to visit Cong Phuong until after the 15th, at the end of January or the beginning of February," Mr. Bay shared.
