Eleven athletes competed in the men's 56kg final. Kim Tuan and Tran Le Quoc Toan were considered the strongest contenders, as they did not have to compete with top weightlifters from China and Indonesia. In fact, the Vietnamese duo only needed to successfully lift their starting weight to win the gold and silver medals.
In the snatch event, Kim Tuan initially registered 125kg and Quoc Toan 120kg, while the remaining athletes only weighed between 92kg and 118kg. Vietnam's number one weightlifter easily took the lead with a performance of 131kg, ahead of 19-year-old Jia Xionghui who achieved 128kg. Quoc Toan was unsuccessful in his final attempt, only achieving 123kg and finishing third.

In the clean and jerk portion, the initial registered lifts of the two Vietnamese weightlifters were significantly higher than their competitors. Therefore, Kim Tuan and Quoc Toan only began their competition when the other athletes had almost finished. Starting with 147kg and both successfully lifting it, Vietnam secured the top two positions. Subsequent clean and jerk lifts became a close race between the two teammates to improve their performance. Ultimately, Kim Tuan achieved a total lift of 282kg and Quoc Toan 276kg.
In the long jump final, there were 12 athletes participating, but Bui Thi Thu Thao was almost exclusively competing against Olga Rypakova (Kazakhstan).
SThe difference in space and the feeling of competing indoors seems to prevent Thu Thảo from reaching the same high level of performance as she would in outdoor athletics. The 2017 SEA Games champion only achieved a certain result.6.36m, 0.32m less than the record she set in Malaysia in August. She finished right behind them.Rypakova (achieved 6.43m).
After the first day of competition, the Vietnamese delegation won one gold medal, two silver medals, and four bronze medals.
AIMAG 2017 took place from September 16th to 27th. Besides 45 countries from the Asian region, this year's Games also featured 17 countries from Oceania. The Vietnamese sports delegation consisted of 164 members, competing in 14 out of 21 sports.
