Thai Xuyen 111 - a superior rice variety for the spring crop.

Pearl December 9, 2025 09:45

In agricultural production, rice varieties are always one of the decisive factors that help farmers achieve high yields, good rice quality, and resistance to pests and diseases. With its superior qualities, Thai Xuyen 111 hybrid rice continues to affirm its position as a "mainstay variety" in many provinces in Northern and North Central Vietnam.

Resistant to harsh climates and high productivity.

Thai Xuyen 111 is a three-line hybrid rice variety developed through a collaboration between ThaiBinh Seed Group and Sichuan Agricultural University. In terms of growth characteristics, Thai Xuyen 111 is a temperature-sensitive variety, suitable for the climate of Northern and North Central Vietnam.

The growing season in the winter-spring crop is approximately 130-135 days, and in the summer-autumn crop (main crop) approximately 105-110 days. The plants are 105-118 cm tall, with vigorous tillering, straight leaves, medium leaf width, and long-lasting green color, making them tolerant to intensive cultivation. The variety excels in its large panicles with many long, numerous seeds. The weight of 1,000 seeds is approximately 27-28 grams, indicating high yield potential.

One of the strongest points of Thai Xuyen 111 is its impressive yield. According to ThaiBinh Seed, the average yield is 57–72 quintals/hectare, but with good intensive care, the yield can reach 80–90 quintals/hectare. Beyond yield, the quality of this rice variety is also highly favored by growers and consumers. It has a high milling rate of approximately 72%, the rice is translucent, the cooked rice is soft, and has a delicious aroma. The amylose content (an indicator affecting the stickiness and softness of cooked rice) is recorded at approximately 16.05%.

Regarding pest and disease resistance, in controlled trials, Thai Xuyen 111 variety showed good response to blast disease (disease level 7), bacterial leaf blight (disease level 5), and brown planthopper (damage level 5). This gives farmers more peace of mind when cultivating, reducing pesticide costs and the risk of crop failure.

Northern Vietnam, with its cool climate, cold winters, and humid summers, is very suitable for temperature-sensitive varieties like Thai Xuyen 111. Tests conducted by ThaiBinh Seed in provinces such as Thai Binh, Hung Yen, and other areas of the Northern Delta, as well as numerous demonstration plots, including Thai Xuyen 111, have shown high scores in yield, lodging resistance, and good tillering ability.

Furthermore, ThaiBinh Seed's distribution system in Northern Vietnam is extensive, making it easy for farmers to access the seeds. This variety has been cultivated for many years, and its results have been proven. With the application of intensive farming techniques, proper fertilization, and maintaining the correct planting density, farmers often achieve significantly higher yields compared to traditional, common rice varieties. The panicles are large, with many grains, minimal empty grains, and the cooked rice is soft, fragrant, and highly accepted by the local market.

In Central Vietnam, especially in the North Central region such as Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces, the Thai Xuyen 111 rice variety has been widely adopted and cultivated by farmers. In Ha Tinh, Thai Xuyen 111 has been widely planted on an area of over 4,000 hectares, concentrated in areas such as Duc Tho district. This hybrid variety not only adapts well but also has the potential to expand its production area. According to assessments in demonstration models, Thai Xuyen 111 yields approximately 60-65 quintals/hectare in Ha Tinh, along with stability and good disease resistance. Given the Central region's climate with high temperatures and intense sunshine, its good growth during the summer-autumn crop season helps Thai Xuyen 111 maintain its yield potential and rice quality.

Practical effectiveness in Nghe An

For the 2025 summer-autumn crop season, ThaiBinh Seed supplied over 200 tons of rice seeds, including TBR97 and tens of tons of Thai Xuyen 111 rice, to Thanh Chuong, Do Luong, Dien Chau, Quy Hop, and Quynh Luu (formerly) districts of Nghe An province.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Director of Tan Ngoc Agricultural Service Cooperative in Quynh Son commune, stated: "The Thai Xuyen 111 rice variety was chosen because it is suitable for semi-mountainous areas, has stable yields, and the rice remains sticky for a long time, unlike other varieties that are sticky at the beginning of the season but not later. After rice production, the cooperative buys the fresh rice at 6,500 VND/kg at the field. Calculated per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), yielding 500 kg, the income is 3.3 million VND/sao, which is quite good compared to other rice varieties."

Mr. Tran Van Phuong, a farmer in Hamlet 8, Quynh Son Commune, shared: “In the spring of 2025, my family planted 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of Thai Xuyen 111 rice variety. The rice produced larger, taller ears compared to other varieties. The yield was about 3.6 to 3.7 quintals per sao.”

Regarding the 2026 spring crop, Ms. Ho Thuong, the agricultural specialist in Quynh Son commune, stated that Quynh Son plans to cultivate 1,000 hectares of Thai Xuyen 111 rice variety out of a total area of 1,553 hectares. Currently, the Quynh Luu Irrigation Enterprise, supply companies, and affiliated companies are coordinating with the commune to implement the production.

In many communes of the former Thanh Chuong district, the yield of Thai Xuyen 111 rice is estimated to reach 74 quintals/hectare in the spring crop of 2025.

This year, ThaiBinh Seed continues to supply Thai Xuyen 111 rice variety to localities in Nghe An province for the 2026 spring crop, aiming for high yield and stable quality. Despite storms and heavy rains during the recent summer-autumn crop, the rice variety showed minimal lodging, good yield, and was favored by farmers. Mr. Pham Xuan Son, Director of ThaiBinh Seed's North Central Branch, stated that thanks to the positive results from the Thai Xuyen 111 rice demonstration models, many communes in Nghe An province have incorporated this variety into their large-scale production structure.

Thai Xuyen 111 is not simply a high-yield hybrid rice variety, but also a crucial link in ThaiBinh Seed's crop breeding strategy aimed at improving rice production quality in northern and north-central provinces such as Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, etc., areas with suitable soil and moderately dry elevation.

However, to maximize the potential of Thai Xuyen 111 in Nghe An and other provinces, there are still some points to note: This is an F1 hybrid variety, so farmers cannot save the seeds for the next planting season, which may increase seed costs per season, and farmers need additional support from ThaiBinh Seed; Regarding production techniques, to achieve high yields like those in demonstration models (70-80 quintals/hectare), farmers need to strictly adhere to techniques for sowing, transplanting, fertilizing, and pest and disease control; Relevant agencies also need to strengthen training programs to help farmers master production techniques...

ThaiBinh Seed is a company with a long history in the field of plant breeding in Vietnam. The company invests heavily in research and development of new varieties, establishing stable production, and providing seeds widely. Simultaneously, its extensive distribution network makes it easy for farmers in many provinces to access high-quality seeds. In particular, ThaiBinh Seed's close collaboration with local authorities, agricultural extension services, and farmers through workshops, conferences, demonstration models, and technical guidance is key to making the Thai Xuyen 111 variety a truly leading crop.
