These days, many localities in Nghe An province are entering the spring rice planting season. Although working in the fields during the twelfth lunar month is hard work, many rice planters earn a good income in return, allowing them to prepare for a more prosperous Tet holiday.

This rice season, many households are farming, but due to labor shortages, they often have to hire people to transplant seedlings. Many women take advantage of the time before their own fields are sown or transplanted to work as hired transplanters. They go in groups of 3-5 people, gathering early in the fields that are being prepared for transplanting. After reaching an agreement, the transplanters will follow the landowners to the fields. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue, from Vinh Tien hamlet, Vinh Thanh commune (Yen Thanh district), said: "This rice crop, my family cultivates 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of rice fields. My husband and I couldn't manage it all, so we hired 4 laborers to transplant the seedlings." According to Ms. Hue, many localities in the district have already started planting, making it more difficult to find people to transplant seedlings. Some households have had to ask acquaintances to call transplanters from other districts. Photo: Huy Thu

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong (43 years old), originally from Nghi Van commune (Nghi Loc district), is currently planting rice in Vien Thanh commune (Yen Thanh district). She said that her family cultivates 7 sao (approximately 0.7 hectares) of rice fields, and they have already sown 3 sao this season. Since the planting season hasn't started yet in her hometown, she's taking advantage of the opportunity to work as a hired rice planter with others in her commune. From 4 am, they wake up, cook rice, and eat quickly before heading to the distant rice fields in Yen Thanh. (Photo: Huy Thu)

Upon arriving at the rice field, if the landowner hasn't prepared the seedlings, the transplanters must pull up the seedlings, transport them to the field... and then transplant them. Most of the people hired to transplant rice seedlings nowadays only want to go to the field to transplant, and don't want to take on additional tasks like pulling up seedlings or spraying snailicide... Rice planting in the twelfth lunar month often encounters monsoon winds, and on freezing cold days, the planters have to stand all day in the mud, which is quite arduous. Planters working during these days have to wade through deep rice paddies, sometimes even stepping on snail shells and broken glass... Photo: Huy Thu

Nowadays, those who work far from home planting rice are often treated to lunch by the landowners at their homes, or they can eat right on the edge of the field. Mr. Nguyen Huu Cong from Hamlet 6, Vien Thanh Commune (Yen Thanh District) shared: His family cultivates one acre of rice field, and this season they hired five people to plant rice. Since he and his wife also work in the fields, they ordered meals from a restaurant for the landowner and the workers to share. (Photo: Huy Thu)

Many landowners treat rice transplanters like family. During the rice transplanting process, in addition to providing lunch, they also buy milk, fruit, and sweets to serve the transplanters, showing great thoughtfulness. Photo: Huy Thu
