The song Mau hoa do (Red Flower Color) was composed by the late musician Thuan Yen in 1991, based on the poem Thoi hoa do (Red Flower Time) by poet Nguyen Duc Mau. The song is about the memories of a time when he and his comrades went through bombs and bullets. In 1994, Red Flower Color won the Vietnam Musicians Association award and the "Excellent Song" award from the Ministry of National Defense.

"The image of a poor soldier leaving his hometown for the battlefield, an old mother with white hair standing in the afternoon shade waiting for her son... always haunts me," Thanh Lam said.
