Vietnamese dragon fruit is preparing to enter the Australian market.

Vietnam will be the first and only country to date to be licensed to import dragon fruit into the Australian market.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has just completed a draft assessment report on fresh dragon fruit from Vietnam. The report proposes granting import permits for fresh dragon fruit from Vietnamese growing regions for commercial purposes into the Australian market, provided that Vietnamese dragon fruit meets biosecurity requirements.

The report by the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is based on a comprehensive assessment of pests and diseases affecting fruit, following technical discussions with the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development).

The report is also based on the results of a direct assessment survey of dragon fruit growing regions in Vietnam conducted by Australian government experts last June.

According to the plan, the risk assessment process for fresh Vietnamese dragon fruit will be completed by the Australian government by the end of this year. If approved, Vietnam would be the first and only country to date to be licensed to import dragon fruit into the Australian market.

To date, Vietnam has been granted permission by Australia to export mangoes and lychees to the Australian market. Although the volume is not yet large, it opens up great prospects for Vietnam's fruit exports.
