Remove high heels when driving a car - a safety rule women need to remember.
High heels make driving feel unnatural, hindering the ability to feel the brake and accelerator pedals and reducing agility in emergency situations.
In early October, Huong had the opportunity to test drive several car models in Singapore. Her instructor was a young, petite woman wearing 5-7 cm high heels.
However, upon getting into the car, she immediately took off her shoes and drove barefoot. She turned to Huong, smiled, and asked for her understanding, explaining that driving in those high heels could put both of them in danger. She said she had participated in countless test drive events like this, but had never changed her safe driving habits. Due to her petite stature, she had to wear high heels to feel confident when interacting at events, but she always took them off and drove barefoot.

Upon returning to Vietnam, Huong met a friend who had a similar habit. However, instead of going barefoot in the car, she always kept a pair of flat shoes (ballet flats) handy. Every time she got out of the car, Huong's friend would spend a few minutes changing from her flats to high heels, or keeping them on if they matched her outfit. She was aware that wearing high heels was uncomfortable while driving, not to mention the unnatural feeling when pressing the brake or accelerator pedals.
High heels elevate the feet higher than usual, making it difficult for drivers to feel the force applied to the brake and accelerator pedals. This can lead to inaccurate handling in various situations.
Furthermore, high heels don't provide good grip or stability for the feet, preventing drivers from maintaining the most comfortable driving posture. The smaller cross-section of high heels compared to flat shoes, combined with the unnatural feel, can cause drivers to lose control of the brake and accelerator pedals.
In addition, some high-heeled shoes can get caught on the floor mats or between the pedals, preventing the driver from reacting in an emergency. There are no legal provisions prohibiting the use of high heels while driving. Anh Tú, a long-time driving instructor at the Fire and Rescue School (Hanoi), shared that whenever he teaches female students, he usually advises them to prepare a pair of flat shoes for easier foot control.
Huong, a driving instructor in Singapore, shared that high heels help women improve their appearance and be more attractive in social situations. However, when driving, the best choice for women is a pair of flat shoes.
