The Vietnam Coast Guard and Fisheries Surveillance Force are currently equipped with many large and very modern patrol vessels.

During Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc's visit to Japan, a meeting at the Deputy Minister level took place between the Ministries of Defense of Vietnam and Japan.

The most noteworthy piece of information from the talks was that the other side indicated they would provide OAD (Original Design Authorization) for the construction of six new patrol vessels for the Vietnam Coast Guard.

Currently, the Vietnam Coast Guard has four DN-2000 patrol vessels, each with a capacity of 2,500 tons, in its fleet.

Compared to other coast guard vessels used by law enforcement agencies in Southeast Asian countries, they have a significant advantage.

It should be recalled that in March 2017, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) received the patrol vessel PL 02 Erimo from the Japan Coast Guard. Immediately, this vessel, with a displacement of 2,066 tons, became the largest vessel of the MMEA, but its size was still only 80% of the DN-2000.

In addition to the four DN-2000 vessels belonging to the Coast Guard, the Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance Force also has four other DN-2000 vessels in its inventory.

In addition, there are dozens of small and medium-sized vessels (with a displacement of 200 to 600 tons), plus the CSB 8003, weighing over 1,000 tons, transferred from South Korea, not to mention the upcoming CSB 8020, with a displacement of 3,200 tons (originally the WHEC 722 - USCGC Morgenthau, handed over by the US Coast Guard), which will soon arrive in Vietnam.

With its already formidable fleet, and the addition of six more patrol vessels provided by Japan, it can be confidently stated that the Vietnamese Coast Guard is the best-equipped in Southeast Asia, far surpassing both Malaysia and Indonesia.
