Two more Paralympic medals for the Vietnamese sports delegation.

This morning (September 13th), the Vietnamese Paralympic team performed exceptionally well, winning two more valuable medals thanks to track and field athlete Cao Ngoc Hung and swimmer Vo Thanh Tung.

Vo Thanh Tung won a historic silver medal for Vietnamese swimming at the Paralympic Games.

In the swimming pool, Vo Thanh Tung won the silver medal – a historic silver medal for Vietnamese swimming at the Paralympic Games – with a time of 33.94 seconds, behind the host country's athlete from Brazil who won the gold medal with a time of 32.78 seconds. Tung finished ahead of American athlete Perkins Roy, who won the bronze medal with a time of 34.42 seconds.

In last night's qualifying round, Tung finished second with a time of 33.87 seconds, breaking the Asian record.

Vo Thanh Tung was born in Phu My commune, Phu Tan district, An Giang province. Born like any other normal child, tragically, at the age of two, Tung suffered from a prolonged fever that caused his legs to gradually atrophy. This misfortune did not break the heart of the boy from the Mekong Delta. Tung began to learn to walk, and despite the difficulties, he never gave up. And fate smiled upon him; after six years of learning to walk, filled with sweat and tears, Tung was finally able to walk again on his own two feet.

Thanh Tung's athletic career came about quite by chance. Seeing that Tung was a good swimmer, his uncle introduced him to Can Tho city to participate in activities with people with disabilities. From then on, Tung's swimming talent developed remarkably.

An opportunity arose for Tung, opening a new chapter in his life. In 2005, he was invited to compete for the disabled sports movement in Can Tho City. Also in 2005, Tung participated in the National Sports Games for the first time and won 3 gold medals. In 2009, competing for the Vietnamese disabled swimming team for the first time, Tung broke the Southeast Asian record twice.

Since then, Tung has been virtually unrivaled in the region. Furthermore, he excelled, winning the Asian gold medal in 2010 and, notably, achieving the remarkable feat of winning 5 gold medals at the 2014 Asian Paragames, most recently a bronze medal at the World Championships, achieving the A qualifying standard for the 2016 Paralympic Games, and a gold medal at the recent European Open Championships.

Meanwhile, track and field athlete Cao Ngoc Hung won a bronze medal in the javelin throw with a performance of 42.96m on his third attempt. This is the first bronze medal for the track and field team after participating in 5 Paralympic Games. The gold and silver medals went to two athletes from Iran: Khalvandi Mohammad with 45.63m and Heidari Til Abdollah with 43.77m.
