A Moroccan teenager set herself on fire after eight men who raped her were granted bail and threatened to publish the sensitive video online.

On August 4, the Daily Mail (UK) reported that a 17-year-old girl poured a flammable substance on herself and then set herself on fire. The scene of the girl's self-immolation was on a street in Ben Guerir City, Morocco.

Some people around took the victim to the hospital but due to severe burns, the girl did not survive.

Omar Arbib, a member of a human rights organization based in the neighboring city of Marrakech, told local media that eight men who gang-raped the girl threatened to release a video of the humiliation online.

The rape took place late last year in a village between the cities of Ben Geurir and Marrakech. Seven of the suspects – known drug traffickers – were quickly arrested. The last was caught after abusing a boy two months later.

The 17-year-old girl decided to set herself on fire on August 2 after learning that the suspects were released on bail and planned to release the sick video.

Previously, in 2012, 16-year-old Amina Filali from Larache, Morocco, committed suicide after being forced to marry her rapist. Under a controversial law that was repealed in 2014, rapists were allowed to marry their victims to avoid being convicted.

Filali’s father, Lahcen, said his daughter only confessed to the rape two months after the assault. Prosecutors even advised her to marry the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International (AI) on August 4 condemned Iran’s hanging of a minor for raping a boy in December 2014. At that time, Hassan Afshar was only 17 years old. Afshar was accused of forcing a child to have sex with two other young men.

Afshar was hanged on July 19 at Arak prison in Markazi province. Amnesty International said Iranian judicial officials had assured Afshar’s family that they would review his case next month but carried out the execution anyway. Afshar was not told of the death sentence before he was killed.

Days after Afshar's hanging, Iranian authorities postponed another execution for Alireza Tajiki, who was under 18 at the time of his conviction.

International law, including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, prohibits the death penalty for defendants under 18 years of age./.
