Teenage girl uses $1 million mistakenly transferred by bank to buy designer bags.

Christine Jiaxin Lee was arrested at Sydney airport on May 4th while attempting to flee to Malaysia after spending nearly $1 million that had been mistakenly transferred to her account.

According toTelegraphWestpac, one of Australia's largest banks, mistakenly transferred money to Lee.

Prosecutors said that, starting when she turned 18 in August 2012, within a year Lee withdrew money to buy numerous handbags and luxury goods without notifying the bank of this error. Lee is charged with willful fraud.

The bank stated that it mistakenly created an unlimited overdraft account for Lee and was unable to recover the $2.6 million. However, Lee's lawyer argued that she only used approximately $764,000.

An Australian court yesterday granted Lee bail, emphasizing that the money in the fund was not "criminal money" and could be spent legally, although Lee still has to repay the money he used.

"She didn't take their money. They gave it to her," Judge Lisa Stapleton said.

Lee is a chemistry student, born in Malaysia and living in Australia for the past five years. Lee is accused of attempting to flee to Malaysia using an emergency passport, but her lawyer says she used it because she had lost her old passport and was in a hurry to visit her parents. Although released on bail, Lee is required to report to the police twice a day. The case will continue to be processed in June.
