Sweden delivered JAS 39 Gripen aircraft to Ukraine, creating a boost for over 5,000 jobs and 50 defense companies in the UK thanks to its participation in the production of 30% of the components.

The agreement between Sweden and Ukraine for the supply of Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets is becoming a focal point of attention, not only because of its impact on the battlefield but also because of the significant economic benefits for the United Kingdom. Under this agreement, Sweden is expected to deliver 16 used Gripen C/D aircraft and opens the possibility of selling an additional 20 newer generation Gripen E aircraft to the Ukrainian Air Force.

Notably, the UK defense industry contributes over 30% of the value of each Gripen fighter jet. Implementing this agreement will help maintain over 5,000 high-skilled jobs and involve at least 50 UK businesses.

The key role of British technology in Swedish fighter jets.

The most significant technical contribution from the UK was the Raven ES-05 AESA radar system manufactured by Leonardo UK. This equipment is integrated into the most modern Gripen E series. Compared to the PS-05/A radar equipped on the older Gripen C/D series, the Raven ES-05 AESA radar possesses superior advantages:

  • The operating range is significantly longer.
  • Superior electronic interference immunity.
  • High radar sensitivity and a wider observation range.

In addition to radar systems, Leonardo UK also provides a range of key electronic warfare and target identification equipment such as the Skyward-G passive infrared search and tracking system, the BriteCloud active decoy system, and the NATO-standard IFF Mode 5 identification system.

The involvement of leading defense corporations

Besides Leonardo UK, many other reputable British manufacturers are also deeply involved in the supply chain for this aircraft. APPH is responsible for developing and supplying the landing gear system and hydraulic components. Meanwhile, Martin-Baker, a leading global manufacturer of ejection seats, supplies the Mk10 system, which has been specifically tuned for the Gripen.

In terms of aerodynamics, GKN Aerospace is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the RM16 engines on the Gripen E. This is an improved version based on the well-known General Electric F414 engine. The extensive presence of components and technical services from the UK indicates that London will play a pivotal role in the modernization of the Ukrainian Air Force with Western aircraft in the future.

British Defence Minister Luke Pollard affirmed that this cooperation demonstrates the United Kingdom's solidarity with Ukraine and reinforces the leading position of the country's defense industry on the world map.
