If I lose my Vietnamese citizenship, will my passport still be usable?
Ms. NTV (Vinh Hung ward) asks: My grandson is a Vietnamese citizen and has just submitted an application to renounce his Vietnamese citizenship. After renouncing his citizenship, will my Vietnamese passport still be valid?
Reply:
No, a Vietnamese passport will no longer be valid after a citizen renounces their citizenship.
Specifically, according to Articles 27 and 29 of the 2019 Law on Exit and Entry, when a citizen renounces Vietnamese citizenship, their ordinary passport will be revoked and its validity canceled.

Regarding the processing procedure, within 30 days of the decision to revoke citizenship, the Ministry of Justice will notify the domestic immigration authorities or Vietnamese representative agencies abroad. Then, within 3 working days, the authorities will proceed to revoke and invalidate the passport.
Important note: After renouncing Vietnamese citizenship, you are not allowed to use your Vietnamese passport. Any use of an expired passport may be subject to legal penalties.
