The first part of President Obama's 2016 State of the Union address tackled domestic issues such as the 2016 US presidential election, immigration reform, increased gun control, ensuring fair employment and pay, and the Obamacare healthcare system.
In particular, in his speech, the US President affirmed the need to eradicate the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) and called on the US Congress to grant him the authority to use military force to defeat IS.
According to the White House leader, the country's foreign policy needs to focus on the threat from ISIS and al-Qaeda, but it cannot stop there. "Even without ISIS, instability would continue for decades in many parts of the world, including the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan, parts of Central America, Africa, and Asia," Obama emphasized.
Obama also highlighted issues and unfinished tasks from his time in office, such as lifting the embargo on Cuba, ratifying the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, and taking steps to close the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Additionally, President Obama outlined a list of proposals for the coming year, including helping medical students learn how to write computer code to personalize medications for patients, stabilizing the immigration system, protecting children from gun-related violence, and raising the minimum wage.
President Obama's 2016 State of the Union address was the focal point of American political life in early 2016 and is likely to shape the agenda of the administration and the Democratic Party from now until the 2016 presidential election.
