IS leader killed in Afghanistan

The killing of this leader could signal a major defeat for the organization in Kunar and other neighboring provinces.

The leader of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) group based in the eastern province of Kunar was killed along with his bodyguard in a drone strike on July 13, Afghan authorities announced.

Speaking to the press, provincial government spokesman Ghani Musamim said a drone strike on an IS hideout in Manogai district killed notorious IS leader Esmatullah and his bodyguard.

Esmatullah is known to have played a role in anti-government activities and was involved in terrorist attacks in the areas of Manogai, Watapor and Chapa Dara./.
