British Prime Minister chased through streets after London fire

June 18, 2017 08:47

British Prime Minister Theresa May was chased and shouted at by protesters as she visited volunteers at the London fire station.

Theresa May yesterday afternoon visited St Clement's Church, where volunteers arranged relief supplies for victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper commented that British Prime Minister May had come to make amends, but this only made the crowd angrier. Previously, Mrs. May was criticized by many people on June 15 when she did not visit the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

A crowd gathered outside the church when they heard that Mrs May had arrived. Their attitude then became increasingly hostile, shouting for the prime minister to meet them. “Get her out! Get her out!” one man shouted, while others shouted at the police stationed at the church: “Why did you bring her here? If she cared about the people, she would have come yesterday.”

40 minutes passed, finally the cars in the British Prime Minister's convoy started moving. The British Prime Minister's special car turned the corner.

“She went out the back door,” a woman shouted. The car sped up, as the crowd tried to rush forward. About 70 people chased the prime minister’s car, while police tried to create a “human barrier” to separate them, pushing angry people away as they tried to bang on the car’s doors.

The crowd shouted "shame" and "coward" as the prime minister's car sped away. "I ran behind her car and was blocked by a wall of police officers. I climbed on the hood of a car and shouted at her," said Sharlene Anthony, a woman.

Latif Sheeda was also among the crowd that ran after the British Prime Minister's car. He said people rushed to the church, wanting to let Prime Minister May know she was not welcome. "People were angry. When you go down Latimer Street, there are pictures of children. You can't ignore that," Sheeda said.

"Why is she here today? She doesn't gain any points here, it's just a publicity stunt," Sheeda said.

Mrs May's visit comes a day after tensions rose, with many angry at what they see as the government's failure to address safety conditions in the Grenfell Tower fire.

St Clement's Church has been providing accommodation for Grenfell Tower residents for the past three days. Prime Minister May has met with survivors, community leaders and local residents.

Earlier, the Queen and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, visited the church to comfort the victims. They were welcomed by people and volunteers.

A fire ripped through the 24-storey Grenfell Tower in London early on June 14, killing at least 30 people and leaving many missing. Rescuers fear more than 100 people may have died in the fire and many victims may not be identified.

British Prime Minister Theresa May announced a full investigation into the incident and pledged to provide the answers the people deserve.
