The Prime Minister has recognized the expanded Vinh City as meeting the criteria for a Type I urban area.
On June 4th, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha signed Decision No. 475/QD-TTg recognizing the expanded Vinh City in Nghe An province as meeting the criteria for a Type I urban area.

The expanded Vinh City area includes the entire administrative boundaries of the existing Vinh City, the existing Cua Lo town, and four existing communes of Nghi Loc district (including Nghi Xuan, Phuc Tho, Nghi Thai, and Nghi Phong communes), with a total area of 166.25 km².2.
The planned inner city area includes the entire administrative boundaries of the 16 existing wards of Vinh City, the 7 existing wards of Cua Lo Town, and the 4 existing communes of Vinh City, namely Hung Dong, Hung Loc, Nghi Phu, and Nghi Duc communes, with a total area of 89.56 km².2.
The planned suburban area includes the entire administrative boundaries of 5 existing communes of Vinh City, namely Hung Chinh, Hung Hoa, Nghi An, Nghi Lien, and Nghi Kim, and 4 existing communes of Nghi Loc District, namely Nghi Xuan, Phuc Tho, Nghi Thai, and Nghi Phong, with a total area of 76.69 km².2.
This decision takes effect from June 4, 2024.
