According to RIA Novosti, the German newspaper Spiegel reported that within Germany's largest opposition party – the Christian Democratic Union – there is speculation that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz may undertake a peace mission to Moscow in the coming days.

According to their sources, the media described this situation as occurring at the German Parliament meeting on December 16th to pass a vote of no confidence against Scholz's government.

Spiegel said that a CDU member revealed that, “an old acquaintance and his company are members of Germany’s Eastern Economic Commission, which has had excellent relations with the Kremlin for decades. And the Eastern Commission is convinced that Chancellor Scholz will undertake a ‘peace mission’ to Moscow in the coming days.”

According to Spiegel, the CDU fears that, in the final two months before the snap parliamentary election, Chancellor Scholz might take a surprise action and change the course of the election campaign.

However, Spiegel did not give any official confirmation about the German leader's planned visit to Moscow.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Scholz himself had previously stated at a joint press conference with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal on December 20th that he intended to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin again.

The first telephone conversation between Prime Minister Olaf Scholz and President Vladimir Putin, initiated by Berlin, took place on November 15th, since the Ukraine conflict erupted in February 2022. Regarding this call, President Putin stated that the participants exchanged views, but each maintained their own perspective.
