According to RIA Novosti on January 11, Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said that Greenland lacks independence in carrying out foreign policy activities, because it depends heavily on Denmark.

“When I need to talk to the leader of another country, I have to talk to the Danish ambassador… These are the issues that we want to see change,” Mr. Egede said.

In addition, Prime Minister Egede said that the islanders do not want to be Danish or American, but rather “become Greenlanders.” However, the Prime Minister emphasized that the island has cooperated with countries in the past, is cooperating now, and will continue to cooperate in the future.

Prime Minister Egede also added that he had not yet contacted US President-elect Donald Trump, who has announced the idea of buying the island.

As his inauguration day approaches, Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested that the world’s largest island, Greenland, should become part of the United States. According to Trump, the island is of strategic importance to national security and the protection of the “free world.” Trump has also not ruled out the use of military force to establish control over Greenland.

Greenland Prime Minister Egede responded that the island is not for sale and never will be.

Greenland was a Danish territory until 1953 and remains part of the kingdom. But in 2009 it was granted autonomy with the ability to govern itself and make independent choices in its domestic policy.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, when asked whether US control of Greenland would pose a “military threat” to Russia, Russian State Duma Defense Committee Chairman Andrey Kartapolov replied: “Obviously.” “Greenland is a very large Arctic territory and provides direct access to the Arctic, so for us it is not a good thing,” Kartapolov said.

The Russian official argued that the island could serve as a “good springboard for the US in a hypothetical future intercontinental clash.”
