According to RIA Novosti on January 11, Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede stated that Greenland lacks independence in conducting its foreign policy activities because it is heavily dependent on Denmark.

Mr. Egede said: “When I need to speak with the leader of another country, I have to speak with the Danish ambassador… These are the issues on which we want to see a change.”

Furthermore, Prime Minister Egede stated that the island's residents do not want to be Danes or Americans, but rather "become Greenlanders." However, the Prime Minister emphasized that the island has cooperated with other countries in the past, is cooperating with them now, and will continue to cooperate in the future.

Prime Minister Egede also added that he has not yet been in contact with US President-elect Donald Trump, who has announced the idea of buying the island.

As his official inauguration approached, Donald Trump repeatedly mentioned that Greenland, the world's largest island, should become part of the United States. According to Trump, the island is strategically important to national security and the protection of the "free world." At the same time, Trump even went so far as to not rule out the possibility of using military force to establish control over Greenland.

Greenland's Prime Minister Egede responded that the island is not for sale and never will be.

Greenland was a Danish territory until 1953 and remains part of the kingdom. But in 2009, it gained autonomy with the ability to self-govern and make independent choices in domestic policy.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, when asked whether US control of Greenland posed a "military threat" to Russia, the Chairman of the Defense Committee of the Russian State Duma, Andrey Kartapolov, replied: "Clearly it does." Kartapolov added: "Greenland is a very large territory in the Arctic and provides direct access to the Arctic, so for us, it is not a good thing."

Russian officials argue that the island could serve as a "good springboard for the US in a hypothetical future intercontinental conflict."
