On September 24th, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his wife began an official visit to Vietnam from September 24th to 26th, 2017, at the invitation of Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc.

Vietnam and Hungary established diplomatic relations on February 3, 1950. Hungary has provided Vietnam with valuable support and assistance in the cause of national defense and development.

In terms of economic relations, bilateral trade turnover in the first six months of 2017 reached US$145 million, an increase of over 60% compared to the same period last year. Vietnam's main export items include textiles, footwear, computers, electronic products and components, transport vehicles and parts, etc. Hungary's main export items include pharmaceuticals, machinery, spare parts, chemicals, animal feed, etc.

CalculateAs of 2016, Hungary had 15 active FDI projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital of US$50.66 million, ranking 55th out of 105 countries and territories with direct investment in Vietnam.

Regarding development cooperation, since 2003, Hungary has included Vietnam on its list of priority countries for development aid. In January 2017, the two sides signed a Framework Agreement on Credit Cooperation worth 440 million Euros between the Government of Vietnam and the Government of Hungary to implement development assistance projects in Vietnam.

Education and training is a traditional area of ​​cooperation between Vietnam and Hungary. During President Janos Ader's visit to Vietnam (November 2014), Hungary announced an increase in the number of scholarships for Vietnamese students to 100 per year. From the 2017-2018 academic year, this number was further increased to 150 scholarships for Vietnamese students to study in Hungary.

The Vietnamese community in Hungary currently numbers over 4,000 people, mainly concentrated in Budapest. They are involved in the garment business at Asian markets and shopping centers, enjoying a relatively stable life, and the image of Vietnamese people in Hungary is quite positive. The community remains united and steadfastly connected to their homeland.
