(Baonghean.vn) - Israel will continue to defend itself against the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas while respecting the rules of international law, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on January 26.

Earlier that day, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to take all measures to prevent any violations of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip. Commenting on the ICJ's decision, Netanyahu emphasized: "Israel's commitment to international law is unwavering. Our sacred commitment to defending our country and people is also unwavering..."

The leader stated that Israel would continue to defend itself against Hamas, and declared that its fight was against Hamas, not against Palestinian civilians.

The Israeli Prime Minister affirmed that he would continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip and would do everything possible to save the lives of civilians.

The ICJ has announced provisional measures to ensure that the rights of Palestinians are protected while awaiting a final decision on the case. Israel must submit a report to the court detailing all measures taken within one month.

Lior Ben Dor, spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry, affirmed that the Jewish state regrets the ICJ's decision to accept the case concerning allegations of genocide against the country. He described the military operation in Gaza as complex and stressed the need to continue defending Israel and freeing hostages from Hamas.

South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on December 29 last year, accusing the country of intending genocide in Gaza, where more than 26,000 people have already been killed. South Africa seeks to prove that Israel's military campaign is genocidal in nature and targets the people of Gaza as a whole, as part of the Palestinian population.
