Today (August 15, 2016) is also the 71st anniversary of the Japanese fascist surrender to the Allies in World War II (August 15, 1946).

During the period from 2013 to 2015, Prime Minister Abe made offerings to the shrine. This action is considered to cause a reaction from South Korea and China, as these two countries have for many years objected to Prime Minister Abe and members of the Japanese Cabinet sending offerings and visiting the shrine.

Meanwhile, some members of the Japanese Cabinet such as Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary and parliamentarians also visited the Shrine in the morning of the same day.

Earlier on August 11, Japan's new Minister of Reconstruction of Disaster-Stricken Areas Masahiro Imamura visited the Yasukuni Shrine.

Yasukuni Shrine honors 2.5 million Japanese who died in World War II, including 14 war criminals. China and South Korea consider the shrine a symbol of Japanese militarism./.
