(Baonghean.vn) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced on November 11 that he will continue to urge the United States to ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, and also indicated that he may ask the new US President Donald Trump, who has spoken out against the TPP, to approve the agreement when the two meet in New York next week.

Abe's statement came as the Japanese Senate began discussions on ratifying the trade agreement, following the House of Representatives' passage of a TPP-related bill on November 10, despite growing concerns that the agreement might not be approved by the US Congress, which is necessary for the TPP to take effect.

Throughout the Senate session, the Japanese leader emphasized that he would "take every opportunity to urge the U.S. and the countries participating in this trade agreement to quickly complete their domestic procedures (for ratification)."

On November 10, the Japanese government announced that Prime Minister Abe plans to hold talks with Mr. Trump in New York on November 17, but did not specify whether Abe intends to discuss the TPP.
