“This incident has caused deep pain. I am devastated that it was children who were targeted. We pray for them and send our condolences to their families and loved ones. I have instructed ministers to take immediate steps to ensure safe access to schools.”
On the morning of May 28, a man armed with a knife attacked a group of students waiting for a bus in Kawasaki city, injuring at least 16 people.
Two of them, a female student and a man believed to be the father of one of the children, did not survive. The attacker also died in hospital after trying to commit suicide.
All the injured were taken to hospital, two of whom are in critical condition. Kyodo said the attacker was believed to be in his 50s.
The incident occurred at the same time that US President Donald Trump was on an official visit to Japan. It is known that Mr. Trump's trip also ended today, May 28, with a visit to a US military base located outside the capital Tokyo.
