75-year-old war invalid still passionate about social activities

(Baonghean.vn) - Since joining the army, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hoi has spent nearly 60 years continuously contributing to the Party, the country and the people. Now, at the age of 75, the war invalid is still tirelessly working, being the "support" of the people of Phuc Loc block, Vinh Tan ward (Vinh city).

In the hot July sun, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hoi (born in 1948), Party cell secretary and head of the Veterans Association of Phuc Loc block, Vinh Tan ward (Vinh city) still knocked on the doors of inter-family groups to install fire alarm systems.

“Houses are close together, families use many electrical appliances, and the weather is hot, so the risk of fire is very high. Following the instructions of superiors, we mobilized inter-family groups to install fire alarms and received the consent of the households,” said Mr. Hoi.

In 1965, at the age of 17, Nguyen Quoc Hoi enlisted in the army and became a soldier of the 7th Engineer Regiment. The young soldier's footprints were left all over the battlefield, starting from the Laos battlefield, then returning to serve in the Mau Than Campaign (1968), then participating in opening roads to serve the Route 9 - Southern Laos Campaign.

In 1971, Mr. Hoi was sent to the North to study politics. Nearly 4 years later, he returned to the battlefield, working with his unit to prepare for the Ho Chi Minh Campaign to completely liberate the South. While preparing for the infantry to cross the river to attack Saigon, Mr. Hoi stepped on an enemy mine and was injured. Fortunately, the wound was not too serious, and he was still able to witness the sacred moment in Saigon.

When Pol Pot invaded the southwestern border, causing much suffering to the people, Nguyen Quoc Hoi and his comrades once again went to serve in the fight, contributing to the pursuit and eradication of the remnants of this brutal regime. At that time, fierce fighting broke out again at the northern border, and Hoi's unit was sent to Son Tay, ready to serve the main unit in the battle.

The engineer soldiers who went first and then later always faced hardships and dangers, especially during the years in the fiery Truong Son mountains or on the Kong Pong Cham river in Cambodia. Mr. Hoi himself witnessed many times the scene of bombs taking the lives of his comrades or the extreme pain when the soldiers' bodies were covered with bullet and bomb fragments.

After the war, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hoi was transferred to the Political Department, Military Region 4 and retired at the end of 1993 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During nearly 30 years of military service, the soldier achieved many feats and was awarded many noble medals and orders such as: Military Exploit Medal, Liberation Medal, Victory Flag Medal, Glorious Soldier Medal, etc.

Before he could rest after returning home, Mr. Hoi was elected as Secretary of the Party Cell of Phuc Loc Block, and after a while became Chairman of the Veterans Association and held many positions during his career. No matter what position he held or what job he did, war invalid Nguyen Quoc Hoi always demonstrated a sense of responsibility towards the collective and the people, always putting the interests of the community above personal interests.

Therefore, Mr. Hoi is always trusted by his superiors and loved by the people of Phuc Loc block, becoming a shining example of the community. Every time he stands up to promote movements or build public welfare projects, the people in the block always participate and respond. Having clean, beautiful main roads and spacious cultural houses, the people of Phuc Loc block always remember Mr. Hoi's contributions.

Comrade Nguyen Quoc Hoi is a typical war invalid, despite his old age, he is still active, always taking the lead in movements, and is loved by the people. During his career, Comrade Hoi has many achievements recognized by all levels, including the Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for his achievements in gratitude work, contributing to the cause of building and developing the socio-economy of Nghe An province.
