Although perilla is a common spice, it is a renowned medicinal herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, discovered by the legendary physician Hua Tuo.
Perilla, scientifically known as Perilla frutescens, also called purple perilla or thorny perilla, is one of eight species of perilla plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family, similar to mint.
Perilla is an herbaceous plant, 0.5 - 1m tall, with opposite leaves, serrated edges, the underside is purplish-red, sometimes both sides are purplish, brown or green with rough hairs.
The small perilla flowers grow in long clusters at the ends of branches, are white or purple, grow opposite each other, and have 4 stamens that do not protrude from the flower.
Perilla fruit is a spherical capsule. The entire plant contains fragrant essential oils and is covered in hairs.
The perilla variety with curled leaf edges has higher practical value.
Food poisoning
Crush a handful of perilla leaves and drink the juice. In case of allergic rashes, you can rub the crushed perilla leaves on the itchy area, or you can use fresh perilla leaves and rub them on the affected area repeatedly.
Boil 10g of perilla leaves, 8g of fresh ginger, and 2g of licorice root in 600ml of water, reduce to 200ml, and drink hot 2-3 times a day.
Constipation
Take 20g each of perilla seeds and sesame seeds, grind them into a paste, and mix well with water. Cook until done, strain out the solids, and drink the liquid daily.
The filtered water mentioned above can also be used to cook porridge with white rice, which is very good and effective in treating illnesses.
Treating the common cold
Take the peel of one tangerine, wash it thoroughly, and put it in a pot with 3 thick slices of ginger and a handful of fresh or dried perilla leaves. Add a bowl of water, boil well, drink hot, and cover yourself with a warm blanket. Alternatively, take a handful of fresh perilla leaves, 2 onions, and 3 slices of ginger, chop them all finely, put them in a bowl, crack an egg into it, and mix in some rice porridge. Eat hot, and the cold will go away.
