NATO's Baltic air patrol forces shot down a drone, suspected to be a Ukrainian UAV that had veered off course, for the first time in southern Estonia on May 19.

In Estonia, a NATO Baltic Air Patrol fighter jet intercepted and shot down a drone for the first time over the country's territory. According to preliminary reports, the downed vehicle was most likely a Ukrainian attack drone that had deviated from its course during operation.

Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur confirmed that the radar and air traffic control systems detected the threat early on. He stated, "Our systems identified the airborne target before it penetrated deep into Estonian territory."

After being shot down, the drone crashed into a swampy area. Military units are currently searching for debris for technical analysis. Minister Pevkur also issued a warning urging people not to touch or approach any parts of the UAV if they find them. The incident occurred near Lake Võrtsjärv in southern Estonia, about 70km from the border with Russia.

Scope of influence and regional context

The Estonian armed forces issued a statement at 12:55 p.m. that day, confirming the elimination of the UAV threat in the south. A security alert was maintained for approximately one hour for areas such as Tartu, Jõgeva, Viljandi, Valga, Võru, and Põlva.

The incident occurred amidst a wave of drone attacks in northwestern Russia, bordering Estonia. According to data from ERR, the attacks on the morning of May 19th forced the temporary closure of Pskov and Pulkovo airports in St. Petersburg and the implementation of flight restrictions to ensure safety.

Earlier, the Governor of the Leningrad region also announced that Russian air defenses had shot down two UAVs in the area at around 11:48 a.m. The fact that UAVs are veering into the airspace of the Baltic states is becoming a significant security concern for NATO patrols in the region.
