Kim Jong-un's true age remains a question. In 2016, the US Treasury Department listed his birth date as January 8, 1984. Other sources say he was born on the same day but in 1983.
He is the son of the late Chairman Kim Jong-il and Ko Yong-hui. The late Chairman Kim Jong-il had seven children, including four daughters and three sons. Kim Jong-un is the youngest son.
As a child, he attended Liebefeld-Steinhölzli Schule, a public school in Switzerland, under the pseudonym Pak Un. Around the age of 17, he returned to his home country.
While studying in Switzerland, Kim Jong-un struggled with natural sciences but excelled in music and engineering.
The young North Korean leader is a big fan of American basketball. As a young man, he admired star Michael Jordan. He is close friends with retired player Dennis Rodman, who has visited North Korea several times.
Kim Jong-un holds two degrees: one in physics from Kim Il-sung University, and an officer's degree from Kim Il-sung Military Academy.
Kim Jong-un married Ri Sol-ju in 2009. In 2012, they had a daughter named Ju-Ae. There are now rumors that the North Korean leader has had another child.
