New painkiller found to replace morphine

Scientists have just announced a new synthetic drug tentatively called PZM 21, which has the ability to relieve pain as effectively as morphine, but its outstanding advantage is that it does not cause dangerous side effects.

In experiments on mice, PZM 21 activated a molecular chain in the brain that reduced pain symptoms.

However, what makes PZM 21 different from the pain reliever morphine and prescription pain relievers such as oxycodone and oxycontin is that it does not cause side effects that can inhibit normal breathing.

Each year in the United States alone, a country with an epidemic of opioid use and abuse, respiratory failure caused by the use of this group of painkillers claims the lives of 30,000 people.

Additionally, PZM 21 is not addictive in laboratory mice, unlike morphine and opioids. A third advantage of this drug is that it does not cause constipation, which is common in people who use opioids.

This is the research result of Professor Brian Shoichet from the School of Pharmacy, University of California (USA) and colleagues from Stanford University, North Carolina University (USA) and Friedrich-Alexander University (Germany).

Researchers hope that this study opens up the opportunity to find a "perfect" pain reliever that minimizes side effects for users. Therefore, with PZM 21, scientists will continue to conduct further research to prove that this drug is absolutely safe for users before widely circulating./.
