Bodies of Swiss couple missing 75 years ago found

The frozen bodies of a Swiss couple who went missing 75 years ago have been discovered in the Alps.

Swiss media reported the incident on July 18, after the glaciers melted in the Alps. Marcelin and Francine Dumoulin, parents of seven children, went to milk their cows in the pastures of Chandolin on August 15, 1942.

“We spent our whole lives looking for our parents, without stopping,” their youngest daughter, Udry-Dumoulin, told Le Matin newspaper. “We thought we would give them a funeral one day.”

“I can say that after 75 years of waiting, this news has given me peace of mind,” added their youngest daughter, who is 79 years old this year.

Swiss police said the two bodies, carrying identity cards, were discovered by a worker last week on the mountain at an altitude of 2,615 metres.

Swiss authorities will conduct DNA tests to confirm the identities of the two. Bernhard Tschannen, director of Glacier 3000, told the press: “The bodies were found close together. They were a man and a woman wearing clothes from the Second World War.”

“Their bodies were preserved intact by the ice and snow, and their belongings were also intact,” he added.

“We think they may have fallen into the ravine. When the ice receded, their bodies were exposed,” the Tribune de Geneve newspaper reported.

Seventy-five years ago, Marcelin Dumoulin was a 40-year-old shoemaker and Francine was a 37-year-old teacher. When they left, they left behind five sons and two daughters. The children were then separated and sent to different families.

“For the funeral, I will not wear black. I think white would be more appropriate. It represents hope, which I have never given up,” said Udry-Dumoulin’s youngest daughter.
