"U.S. military hackers have infiltrated Russia's electronic and telecommunications networks, as well as the Kremlin's command system, with the support of such secret cyber weapons that the United States is prepared to attack these vulnerabilities if necessary. This is according to a senior intelligence official, as well as evidenced by top-secret documents that NBC News has reviewed," the television channel reported.
"Cyber warfare weapons would only be deployed in the rare event that the United States carries out a significant, substantial attack, as political figures have stated," NBC News reported. "U.S. officials continue to express concern that Russia is using its cyber capabilities to try to disrupt next week's presidential election."
"US intelligence commanders did not expect Russia to attack critical infrastructure, which, in the view of many, would constitute an act of war — which they believe is more likely to be a cyberattack, including the release of fabricated documents and the dissemination of fake social media accounts to spread misinformation," — the American television channel explained.
