1. Celebrating the 72nd anniversary of the success of the August Revolution

On August 19, in Hanoi, the 72nd anniversary of the success of the August Revolution took place.

Exactly 72 years ago today, August 19, 1945, more than 100,000 people in Hanoi took to the streets to demonstrate their power. The large rally at the Opera House Square turned into an uprising to seize power. The mass forces quickly occupied the Imperial Commissioner's Palace, the City Hall, the security camp and other important offices... The uprising was completely victorious in the capital Hanoi.

This victory opened the way for successful uprisings throughout the country in the following days. For the first time, the entire country's power truly belonged to our people. The success of the August Revolution was one of the most important and glorious events of the Vietnamese people in the 20th century.

2. The Politburo issued regulations on standards for senior officials' titles.

General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has just signed and issued the Politburo's regulations on title standards and evaluation criteria for officials under the management of the Central Committee, Politburo and Secretariat. This is the first time the Politburo has issued specific regulations on title standards and evaluation criteria for senior officials of the Party and State.

According to regulations, cadres under the management of the Central Executive Committee, Politburo, and Secretariat must be absolutely loyal to the interests of the Party, the nation, the people, and be steadfast in Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh Thought, and the ideal goals of national independence and socialism.

In particular, these must be cadres who "absolutely have no ambition for power, are enthusiastic and highly responsible for their work, are the center of solidarity, are exemplary in all aspects, are not corrupt, opportunistic, or self-interested, and are determined to fight to prevent and repel degradation in political ideology, ethics, lifestyle, and manifestations of self-evolution and self-transformation within the organization".

3. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc officially visits Thailand

On the afternoon of August 17, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his wife Tran Nguyet Thu led a high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese government to Bangkok to begin an official visit to Thailand at the invitation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha. The two leaders discussed directions and agreed on measures to promote cooperation in the coming time.

This is Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc's first official visit to Thailand, in the context of the two countries strengthening their Strategic Partnership since 2013. Vietnam and Thailand signed the Action Program to implement the Strategic Partnership for the 2014-2018 period during the Thai Prime Minister's visit to Vietnam in 2014, covering all areas of cooperation.

4. Prime Minister dismisses Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Ho Thi Kim Thoa

On August 16, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed Decision 1203 to dismiss Ms. Ho Thi Kim Thoa from the position of Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade. The decision clearly stated that Ms. Ho Thi Kim Thoa's specific tasks were assigned by the Minister of Industry and Trade.

Previously, the Central Inspection Committee pointed out the violations and shortcomings of Ms. Ho Thi Kim Thoa.

At the 16th session, the Central Inspection Commission reviewed the violations and shortcomings of Ms. Ho Thi Kim Thoa during her tenure as Party Secretary, Director of Dien Quang Lamp Company, Party Secretary, Chairman of the Board of Directors, General Director of Dien Quang Lamp Joint Stock Company (from January 2004 to May 2010) as concluded at the 15th session of the Central Inspection Commission.

5. Discipline 4 former leaders for violations related to the Formosa case

On August 16, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc also signed a series of decisions to discipline officials.

Specifically, in Decision 1199/QD-TTg, the Prime Minister decided to discipline Mr. Nguyen Minh Quang - former Minister of Natural Resources and Environment for the 2011-2016 term with a warning.

In Decision 1201/QD-TTg and Decision 1202/QD-TTg, the Prime Minister decided to discipline Mr. Nguyen Thai Lai and Mr. Bui Cach Tuyen by removing their status as former Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment for the 2011-2015 period.

In Decision 1200/QD-TTg, the Prime Minister decided to discipline Mr. Vo Kim Cu by removing his position as former Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province for the 2005-2010 term and former Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Tinh province for the 2010-2015 term.

These disciplinary decisions are due to violations related to the Formosa Ha Tinh project that caused a very serious environmental incident in 4 central provinces in 2016.

6 Horrific accidents, 5 dead, 6 injured

At around 9:30 p.m. on August 16, on the National Highway 1A bypass, through An Lac Dong 2 village (Phu My town, Phu My district, Binh Dinh province), a tragic accident occurred between a sleeper bus and a tractor-trailer, killing 5 people and injuring 6 others.

The initial assessment of the authorities is that the blade of the bulldozer carried on the trailer hit the left side of the passenger bus when the accident occurred. After the collision, one bulldozer on the trailer fell off the trailer, fell onto the road surface and rotated 90 degrees, the other bulldozer on the trailer also fell out of position.

The sleeper bus was severely damaged on the left side. The passengers sitting on the left side of the bus were all killed or injured.

7. Bomb explosion in Khanh Hoa, at least 6 people died

At 9:30 a.m. on August 18, a particularly serious bomb explosion occurred in Ta Lua village, To Hap town, Khanh Son district. The explosion killed 6 people and injured 2, including 1 seriously injured, possibly life-threatening.

According to initial information, the bomb explosion was caused by local people sawing bombs left over from the war. Among the 6 dead were 3 adults and 3 children from the same family. 2 injured people were later taken to Cam Ranh Regional General Hospital for emergency treatment.
