USD exchange rate on the afternoon of September 18th: Decreased after the Fed lowered interest rates for the first time this year.

As of 6:00 PM on September 18th, the State Bank of Vietnam announced the central exchange rate at 25,186 VND/USD, a decrease of 12 dong compared to September 17th, marking the 10th consecutive day of decline.

With a trading range of ±5%, today's ceiling exchange rate is set at 26,445 VND/USD, while the floor exchange rate is 23,927 VND/USD.

At the State Bank of Vietnam's exchange floor, the reference exchange rate is listed at 23,977 - 26,395 VND/USD for buying and selling respectively.

On the morning of September 18th, the USD exchange rate continued to fall at many banks. At Vietcombank, the listed rate was 26,165 - 26,445 VND/USD, 12 dong lower than the previous day.

BIDV also adjusted the buying price down by 17 dong and the selling price down by 12 dong, listing them at 26,178 - 26,445 VND/USD.

VietinBank maintained its buying price at 26,189 VND/USD, while its selling price decreased by 12 dong to 26,445 VND/USD.

Techcombank recorded a rate of 26,170 – 26,445 VND/USD, an increase of 10 dong in the buying price and a decrease of 12 dong in the selling price.

Eximbank made a more significant adjustment, lowering the buying price by 30 dong to 26,140 VND/USD, while the selling price remained at 26,445 VND/USD.

Sacombank maintained its buying rate at 26,180 VND/USD but also lowered its selling rate by 12 dong to 26,445 VND/USD.

The decline in the USD exchange rate is linked to the Fed's decision on September 17th to lower interest rates by 0.25 percentage points, bringing the rate range to 4.00% – 4.25%. This was the first interest rate cut this year, and the Fed also forecasts two more similar cuts in the remaining meetings of 2025.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell argued that the labor market is weakening and the risks to economic growth are greater than the inflationary pressures. Notably, the new Governor Stephen Miran was the only member to oppose this decision, supporting a steeper rate cut of up to 0.5 percentage points.

The Fed's policy adjustments are expected to strongly influence the trend of the USD exchange rate in the remaining months of the year. As borrowing costs decrease, the US dollar may face further downward pressure, creating opportunities for other currencies, including the VND, to maintain greater stability in the short term.
