Contrary to many people's predictions, Moonlight was named Best Picture, the top prize at the 89th Academy Awards, instead of heavyweight contender La La Land.

After a long time of being criticized as “OscarSoWhite” (Oscar is biased towards white candidates), the results of this year's awards ceremony will probably make many people satisfied because the contributions of black artists have been more properly recognized, with the typical victory of Moonlight, a film about a gay black boy, living in a poor neighborhood in Miami, always struggling with his sexual instinct.

"Moonlight" revolves around the character Chiron from childhood to adulthood.

Another highlight of this year's Oscars was that the Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards were both given to black actors, including Viola Davis (Fences) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight).

Entering the awards night as the most nominated film project (14 categories), La La Land only won 2 important awards, including Best Director (Damien Chazelle) and Best Actress (Emma Stone). Meanwhile, Ryan Gosling was defeated by Casey Affleck's performance in Manchester by the Sea in the Best Actor category.

In total, La La Land won 7 awards at the 2017 Oscar event.
