Smart toilet design can turn waste into ash without using flushing water.

The toilet model called Nano Membrane by researchers at Cranfield University, UK is known as the toilet of the future, according to Tech Insider.

A YouTube video from June 1 shows that this type of toilet does not require water. The toilet lid is closed sAfter each use, tilt the tank 270 degrees, pushing the waste down.

Solid waste falls to the bottom and is transferred to a heat box to be burned to ash. The ash bin is emptied once a week. The wastewater from the cleaning process is filtered through multiple membranes before flowing into the holding tank. This water is not clean enough to drink, but can be used for cleaning or watering plants.

Researchers hope the design could end the use of inadequate toilets that pose health risks in developing countries where people lack access to clean water and septic systems.
