Smart toilet designs can transform waste into ash without the need for flushing.

Billionaire Bill Gates advocates for smart toilet designs. Video: Tech Insider.

According to Tech Insider, the Nano Membrane toilet prototype developed by researchers at Cranfield University in England is being hailed as the toilet of the future.

A YouTube video from June 1st shows this type of toilet that doesn't require water. The toilet lid is simply closed. Each time it's used, the tank tilts 270 degrees, pushing the waste downwards.

Solid waste settles at the bottom and is transferred to a heat box to be burned into ash. The ash bin is emptied once a week. Wastewater from the cleaning process is filtered through multiple membranes before flowing into a storage tank. This water is not clean enough to drink, but it can be used for cleaning or watering plants.

Researchers hope this design can put an end to the use of inappropriate toilets that pose health risks in developing countries, where people lack access to clean water and septic systems.

With its enormous potential for application, tThis design received funding from the billionaire's fund.Bill Gates, who has long shown an interest in toilet designs for the poor.
