Besides Tom Cruise, the new installment of this box office blockbuster franchise also features actress Sofia Boutella (familiar to Vietnamese audiences through her role as the cold-blooded assassin in "Kingsman: The Secret Service"). In the film, Sofia Boutella will play the mummy, marking the first time in Universal's history that a woman has played this monster.
Screenwriter Jon Spaihts has completed the script, but has not yet revealed it to the media. Many sources suggest that the film will not be set in the 1920s like the previous installments. Additionally, Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel are also involved in producing the film.
"The Mummy" is a popular film series that continues to have sequels. The series has released three installments, the most recent being "The Tomb of the Qin Emperor" in 2008. Alongside familiar Hollywood stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, the third film also features top Chinese stars Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh.
The new installment of "The Mummy" was originally scheduled to be released on March 24, 2017; however, according to the latest information, the film's release date will be postponed to June 9, 2017.
Besides the rebooted "The Mummy" project, Universal also revealed that they are developing films based on classic characters such as Frankenstein's monster, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Ghost Bride, and more.
