The whole shrimp pond died.
These days, about the localitiesshrimp farmingIn Quynh Luu district and Hoang Mai town, when it comes to shrimp farming, not only the people but also the local authorities shake their heads in frustration because shrimp are dying in large numbers.
Standing in front of a pond still covered with dead shrimp, Ms. Ho Thi Hoa in Dong Hung hamlet, Quynh Bang commune (Quynh Luu) sadly said that the family has 5 shrimp ponds with a total area of 2 hectares. With the crop rotation process, more than a month ago the family released the shrimp into 1 pond and in early April released the shrimp into 2 ponds. The whole family focuses resources on taking care of the shrimp in the hope of bringing in the main source of income.
However, 4-5 days ago, the shrimp pond that had been there for more than a month suddenly turned white on the surface, so the family contacted a trader to buy it, in order to salvage the capital. However, they could not sell it in time because the shrimp died too quickly. Hundreds of tons of shrimp of 60 pieces/kg had to be scooped up and destroyed, causing the family hundreds of millions of dong in damage.
“After the shrimp died, the family drained all the water from the pond, dried the bottom, then sprinkled lime powder and treated the pond according to technical procedures. Only when the weather was stable did they dare to release the shrimp for breeding. However, the most worrying thing for the family was that they did not know why the shrimp died,” said Ms. Ho Thi Hoa.
In addition to Mrs. Hoa’s shrimp pond, many other shrimp ponds in the surrounding areas are in the same situation. Therefore, most of the shrimp farming areas in Quynh Bang commune are currently in a state of abandoned ponds.
Mr. Ho Dang Tam - Director of Quynh Bang General Agricultural Cooperative said that the locality has 168 hectares of shrimp ponds. Accordingly, by April 20, people had released about 50% of the main crop shrimp area. Unlike before, this crop for unknown reasons, the shrimp died after 7-20 days of release, with a death rate of up to 90%.
To release 1 hectare of shrimp, people have to invest hundreds of millions of dong in buying shrimp seeds, pond treatment materials, and food, so since the beginning of April, shrimp farmers in Quynh Bang have suffered billions of dong in losses.
“Like previous years, shrimp also died, but the death rate was only about 40 - 50% and the cause of death was due to some common diseases. But this year, the death rate of shrimp is much higher and the most worrying thing is that we do not know the cause, but we believe it is due to environmental factors and poor quality of the shrimp,” Mr. Ho Dang Tam shared.
According to Mr. Vu Van Duong - Chairman of Quynh Bang Commune People's Committee, shrimp farming is one of the main sources of income for Quynh Bang, but the current situation of mass shrimp deaths has affected the people's economy. Currently, the local government is propagating and instructing people on how to treat the pond environment so that they can continue to release shrimp larvae in a few months.
Not only Quynh Bang, but many shrimp ponds in the communes of Quynh Luong, Quynh Thanh, Quynh Yen... also died at a high rate.
Mr. Bui Xuan Truc - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture of Quynh Luu district said that up to this point (April 20), people have only released 30 - 40% of the area, the district has received information that a series of shrimp ponds have died at a high rate. Faced with this situation, the district has coordinated with specialized agencies to take samples for testing, but has not yet discovered any disease. However, it is believed that the shrimp died due to the environment, because the weather has changed erratically recently, with hot sun and rain causing the temperature to fluctuate too quickly.
Shrimp death due to environmental factors
Mr. Tran Vo Ba - Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine said that with the concern of Quynh Luu district in supporting the cost of collecting samples for testing when farmed shrimp died, especially in Quynh Bang commune, the Department has collected samples and sent them to the veterinary agency of region 3 for testing. Thereby, there are no symptoms of white spot disease and hepatopancreatic necrosis, but suspected acute hepatopancreatic syndrome.
The reason being thought of is due to the erratic weather, sudden changes in temperature during the day.dead shrimpA series of incidents like the recent past, not only in Quynh Bang but also occurred in key shrimp farming communes in Quynh Luu and Hoang Mai town.
Faced with the unpredictable weather, Mr. Tran Vo Ba recommends: First of all, shrimp farmers need to buy quality shrimp seeds, which must be quarantined by veterinary agencies. In the process of water treatment, attention must be paid to the supply and drainage sources to ensure the environment. Currently, many shrimp farming areas share the same water supply and drainage system, so the risk of disease outbreaks for shrimp is high.
During the farming process, farmers need to follow technical instructions, especially regularly monitor weather developments to adjust appropriate care regimens, especially in hot weather, it is necessary to increase water fans to increase the amount of oxygen in the pond./.
