General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan attended the meeting commemorating the 75th anniversary of the first general election.
On the afternoon of January 6th, at the National Assembly building, the Standing Committee of the 14th National Assembly held a meeting to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first general election (January 6, 1946 - January 6, 2021). General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan attended the meeting. Also present were leaders and former leaders of the Party, State, and Vietnam Fatherland Front, as well as members of the National Assembly from different generations.

Following the great success of the August Revolution, despite countless difficulties, internal enemies, and external aggressors, driven by the supreme interests of the nation, the determination to protect the newly won independence and freedom, consolidate the fledgling revolutionary government, and continue to unite all patriotic forces, under the wise and skillful leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, the general election on January 6, 1946, was a complete victory, going down in national history as a glorious milestone in the process of building a democratic system, legally affirming the right of the Vietnamese people to self-determination: from a state of slavery, they rose up to gain independence, take control of their national destiny, and organize their own state - the first worker-peasant state in Southeast Asia.
This victory ushered in a new era for the country, with a unified National Assembly and Government, a progressive 1946 Constitution, and a system of government with a solid legal basis to represent the Vietnamese people domestically and internationally.

Throughout its 75-year history, the National Assembly has always been closely associated with and accompanied the nation, always embodying the great national unity. Regardless of the circumstances or historical period, it has always fulfilled its responsibilities as the highest representative body of the people and the highest state power organ of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, making immense and important contributions to the country's revolutionary cause. The 14 terms of the National Assembly represent a continuous process of inheritance and development, constantly innovating to meet the demands of each revolutionary stage. The practical experience of previous National Assemblies serves as valuable lessons for consolidating and improving the quality and effectiveness of subsequent National Assemblies.
Speaking at the meeting, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan stated that, inheriting the traditions of 13 previous National Assembly terms, with a spirit of unity, creativity, and action for the benefit of the people, the 14th National Assembly has achieved quite comprehensive results in various fields, from legislation, supervision, and decision-making on important issues to parliamentary diplomacy, contributing to the great historical achievements of the country in 35 years of reform.
The Chairman of the National Assembly affirmed: "On the one hand, we must focus on concretizing the provisions of the 2013 Constitution, continuing to build and perfect a synchronous, unified, feasible, open, and transparent legal system, a breakthrough in the development process; on the other hand, we must actively innovate and improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of supreme oversight activities and decision-making on important issues, delving into many major, thorny, and inadequate issues, encompassing all areas of socio-economic life, promptly meeting the demands of reality and the aspirations of voters and the people nationwide."
Parliamentary diplomacy has also been strengthened, leaving many outstanding marks and clearly demonstrating Vietnam's role as an active, proactive member, a reliable and responsible partner, and the Vietnamese National Assembly in the international community, contributing to enhancing the country's position and prestige in the region and the world. The working methods of the National Assembly have also undergone a strong transformation, from a "discussion" National Assembly to a "debate" National Assembly; the application of information technology has been strengthened, contributing to improving the professionalism, quality, and efficiency of the National Assembly's activities.
The great achievements and precious traditions of the glorious 75-year journey of the Vietnamese National Assembly will create an important and solid foundation for the 15th National Assembly and subsequent National Assemblies to continue to inherit, develop, and better fulfill their functions, tasks, and powers as stipulated in the Constitution and laws. Especially important are the core, timeless lessons that remain valuable: the strength of unity; the ideology of respecting, being close to, and being friendly with the people, maximizing the people's right to self-governance; ensuring the comprehensive leadership of the Party; and constantly innovating, being creative, firmly grasping theory, closely following practice, and "turning crisis into opportunity."

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan emphasized: "In today's joyful, emotional, and proud atmosphere, we are reminded to forever cherish the contributions of our beloved President Ho Chi Minh and the immense sacrifices of our predecessors and countless revolutionary fighters, compatriots, and comrades for the victory of the first General Election. We are forever grateful to the National Assembly delegates of all terms who have represented the will and aspirations of the people, fighting alongside the entire nation for independence, freedom, and unity, and working together to build and develop the country into an increasingly prosperous and happy nation. With the great and historically significant achievements of 76 years of its founding, construction, and development, and nearly 35 years of reform, our country is confidently entering a new stage of development. The upcoming 13th National Congress of the Party will adopt many important documents of strategic significance, setting out goals and tasks associated with each important milestone of the country."
Therefore, according to National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, the immediate and long-term tasks of the country in general and of the National Assembly in particular are very challenging, requiring the National Assembly's activities to continue to be reformed and improved to further enhance quality and efficiency, contributing more to the reform and international integration process, contributing to the successful implementation of the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party and successfully organizing the election of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and deputies to People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term.
Under the leadership of the Party, with the close coordination of agencies and organizations within the political system, with the cooperation and assistance of international friends, and with the support, sharing, and supervision of voters and the people nationwide, the National Assembly will continue to uphold its glorious traditions, constantly grow stronger, innovate, and truly be the highest representative body of the people, the highest state power organ of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, striving together with the entire Party, army, and people to successfully achieve the goal of "a prosperous people, a strong nation, democracy, fairness, and civilization" as envisioned by the beloved President Ho Chi Minh and the aspiration for a strong and prosperous Vietnam of the entire nation.
