General Department of Environment: Coastal seawater in 4 central provinces meets standards.

Analyzing 9 to 16 indicators in seawater samples from four provinces (Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue), the General Department of Environment (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) assessed that all were within permissible limits.

To assess the quality of coastal seawater in the four provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue, the General Department of Environment, under the leadership of the Ministry's Environmental Monitoring Center and in coordination with local authorities, conducted measurements, sampling, and analysis to evaluate the changes in coastal seawater quality (for swimming and water sports activities) at the beaches of these four provinces.

On April 29th, the Environmental Monitoring and Engineering Centers of the provinces collected coastal water samples to examine indicators such as pH, DO, N-NH4, CN, Cr, total Cr, TSS, Pb, Fe, Cu, Zn... Each province collected water samples at least 3 locations, and up to 6, focusing on bathing areas, including Da Nhay, Nhat Le (Quang Binh); Trieu Lang, Cua Viet (Quang Tri); Lang Co, Canh Duong, Thuan An (Thua Thien - Hue)...

On May 1st, the results of monitoring the quality of coastal seawater at beaches in the four provinces showed that all were within the permissible limits of the regulations.National technical standards for seawater quality, serving the purposes of water sports and recreation.

Earlier on April 28, the General Department of Environment advised the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to send an urgent dispatch regarding the assessment of coastal seawater quality in four provinces: Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue.

Specifically, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment requires localities to regularly monitor, sample, and analyze coastal seawater twice a day (morning and afternoon). At each location, two samples should be taken: one sample processed by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and one sample sent to the General Department of Environment.

Since the beginning of April, marine fish in four provinces—Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue—have died en masse, totaling approximately 70 tons. On April 27th, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment identified two main possible causes for the mass fish deaths: red tide and chemicals discharged by humans.The Prime Minister has directed ministries and agencies to urgently find the exact cause of the fish deaths, and at the same time implement policies to support and help fishermen sell their fish; and monitor sources of wastewater discharge into the sea...
