The South Korean president is ready to resign next April.

A senior adviser to South Korean President Park Geun-hye mentioned on December 5th the possibility that the politician is ready to resign in April. This statement comes as opposition parties say they may be able to garner enough votes to impeach Park Geun-hye.

Speaking at a parliamentary hearing, South Korean President Park Geun-hye's senior adviser, Hur Won-je, said she was ready to accept the ruling Saenuri Party's proposal to resign in April.

If President Park Geun-hye resigns, a new presidential election will be held in South Korea within 60 days. If the National Assembly agrees to vote on whether or not to impeach the president, Park will be suspended from power, unless the Constitutional Court intervenes in the National Assembly's decision.

Commenting on the situation in South Korean politics, Nam Chang-hee, a professor of political science at Inha University, said: “If Park is suspended from power, she will not be able to implement the measures she wants when the situation improves. Her declaration of willingness to resign in April could give her another five months to consolidate her influence.”

Opposition parties in South Korea announced on December 2nd that they will vote on impeaching President Park Geun-hye on December 9th. However, for the proposal to pass, it must be supported by at least 200 lawmakers, meaning the parties need to secure the approval of at least 28 lawmakers from Park's ruling Saenuri Party.

There is a possibility that a group of Saenuri Party lawmakers will support the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye regardless of whether she resigns in April. On Facebook, Saenuri Party lawmaker Chang Je-won stated that he and 29 other lawmakers from the same party made their decision after witnessing Sunday's protests against President Park Geun-hye in Seoul.

Representative Chang Je-won stated, "Agreeing to the impeachment proceedings is the only way to humbly accept the will of the people and restore the government to its proper functioning."

Meanwhile, according to the Korea Times, Yun Ho-jung, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party, the main opposition party in South Korea, stated that if President Park Geun-hye is impeached and tried on all charges, she could face a life sentence. Yun said his statement was well-founded, based on advice from his legal advisors.
