What will President Trump eat in Vietnam?
During his short day in Hanoi, will the US President have time to appear at a long-standing restaurant in the middle of the old quarter?
US President Donald Trump is known for his love of food. In an interview with Fox Business about his decision to launch 59 Tomahawk missiles into Syria, he said: “I was sitting at the dinner table. We had just finished dinner and were having dessert. We were having the best chocolate cake in the world. President Xi Jinping really liked it.”
In another TV appearance about his decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, Trump also mentioned that he and Comey had dinner together: “We were having a very nice dinner, and he said to me, you are not under investigation, which I already knew.”

There is no official information about the US President’s physical measurements. According to many sources, Mr. Trump is between 1m88 and 1m91 tall and weighs between 90 and 115kg. As such a large man, it is not surprising that the head of the White House considers eating one of the great “pleasures” of life.
President Trump is currently on a 12-day tour of five Asian countries and attending the 2017 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. During his stay in Da Nang and Hanoi, Mr. Trump will certainly have the opportunity to enjoy some typical Vietnamese dishes. During his official visit to Vietnam last year, President Barack Obama took the time to eat bun cha at a long-standing restaurant in the center of Hanoi.
Catering for heads of state is always kept secret, but Mr. Trump’s eating habits are not so secret. Therefore, besides cao lau, pho or banh cuon, it is very likely that the US President’s favorite dishes will also appear on the banquet table.
Let's take a look at some of the special eating habits of the current US President.
- Mr. Trump likes his steak well-done, even a little dry. In return, he adds a lot of tomato sauce, believing that it will enhance the flavor of the beef.
- The US president likes simple, salty, fatty food – in other words, fast food. What he values more, however, is the consistency and hygiene standards in the fast food processing process. “It only takes one bad burger to destroy the whole McDonald's,” Mr. Trump once said. “I like cleanliness, and I think you should go there to eat.”[fast food restaurant], instead of choosing places where the food is of unknown origin.”
- When he doesn't order steak, Mr. Trump often chooses a mixed fish and shrimp dish.
- At the 2015 Iowa State Fair, Mr. Trump ate an entire string of grilled pork ribs and appeared to really “enjoy” the dish.
