Toyota Wigo - a heavyweight 'newbie' in the urban car segment

The appearance of Toyota Wigo at the 2017 Vietnam Auto Show promises a more exciting race in the A-class compact car segment, where Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Morning are dominating.

The Toyota Wigo model displayed at the Vietnam Motor Show 2017 (VMS 2017) is the G version with a striking Orange Metallic exterior. Wigo has a compact body, true to the urban car line with dimensions of length x width x height (3,660 x 1,600 x 1,520) mm.

The front of the car is reminiscent of its "big brother" Yaris when applying Toyota's latest design language, clearly shown through the large hexagonal grille and horizontal bar with the logo. Projector headlights, integrated LED daytime running lights, fog lights connected to the front bumper, rearview mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Being in the low-cost car segment, it is difficult to demand too much from the Wigo's cabin. The interior details are all made of hard plastic and felt. The steering wheel has integrated function control keys along with a 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth connection, and fully electric windows. The rear seats can be folded back to expand the luggage compartment, but can only be folded 100%. In addition, Wigo is equipped with an ABS anti-lock braking system, front airbags for the driver and passengers, and 3-point seat belts on all seats.

The Wigo version appearing at VMS 2017 has a 1KR-FE engine, 3 cylinders, 12 electronic fuel injection valves, 1.0 liter capacity. This engine produces a maximum capacity of 65 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 89 Nm at 4,400 rpm, although quite "inferior" compared to competitors, it is still enough for flexible operation in urban areas, while ensuring fuel economy criteria.

First launched in 2012, Wigo targets young customers who want to own a dynamic and affordable car. After a market survey at VMS 2017, Toyota plans to officially sell this model in Vietnam from 2018. In its most recent launch at the IIMS exhibition in Indonesia in April 2017, Wigo had a starting price of 9,900 USD, equivalent to about 225 million VND. Currently, the two most prominent names in the small hatchback segment in Vietnam are Kia Morning and Hyundai Grand i10, with prices starting from 315 million VND and 340 million VND, respectively.
